Students at Michigan State University Discuss Pink Ribbon Blues as an Exemplar of Feminist Research

On Wednesday (April 18th) I’ll be doing a virtual workshop (via SKYPE teleconference) with students in Dr. Stephanie Nawyn‘s course on Feminist Research Methods at Michigan State University.

What is feminist research?

At its most basic level, feminist research actively seeks to remove power imbalances between research and subject; has a major role in changing social inequality; and begins with . . . → Read More: Students at Michigan State University Discuss Pink Ribbon Blues as an Exemplar of Feminist Research

A Research Grant Changed My Life

In the January 2011 issue of The Independent Scholar I shared a glimpse of my transition from tenure track professor to independent scholar (Vol. 24, Issue 1). In “An Independent Scholar: An Independent Voice” I focused briefly on my “calling” to practice sociology in “a more focused, public, and action-oriented capacity.”

While it had always been my desire to be . . . → Read More: A Research Grant Changed My Life

“Pink Ribbon Blues” at SCSU!

Last week I presented “Pink Ribbon Blues” to medical sociology students at Southern Connecticut State University. Not only had they read the book in its entirety, they were full of insightful comments and questions following my 60-minute slide presentation. Our discussion revolved around key themes:

How did the pink ribbon become so profitable? Why isn’t the bulk . . . → Read More: “Pink Ribbon Blues” at SCSU!

“The Emperor Has No Clothes”: Komen for the Cure Exposed

I’m pleased to have written a guest editorial for KomenWatch about the recent scandal involving the Komen organization.

Komen for the Cure®.” The KomenWatch website includes a large, searchable database of news sources and . . . → Read More: “The Emperor Has No Clothes”: Komen for the Cure Exposed

The real scandal: science denialism at Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Journalist Christie Aschwanden has written one of the finest essays I’ve read about the “false narrative” (i.e., the fairytale notion that breast cancer is a uniformly progressive disease that starts small and only grows and spreads if you don’t stop it in time), and its use in selling wholesale screening, along with accompanying lifestyle and product placements, to the masses. . . . → Read More: The real scandal: science denialism at Susan G. Rachel Cheetham Moro 1970-2012

Rachel of The Cancer Culture Chronicles died early this morning following a long struggle with metastatic breast cancer. Although I find it difficult to write or even see through blurry tear-filled eyes, I need to share this with you today.

I first met Rachel in the blogosphere after Pink Ribbon Blues was released in October 2010. At the time, she . . . → Read More: Rachel Cheetham Moro 1970-2012

Beyond Hypocrisy: Komen for the Cure’s Assault on Women’s Health

It’s difficult to be anything less than infuriated with Susan G. Komen for the Cure right now for its tactical decision to stop giving grants to Planned Parenthood for screenings and breast health services.

An article from the Associated Press sums up the issue:

“The nation’s leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its . . . → Read More: Beyond Hypocrisy: Komen for the Cure’s Assault on Women’s Health
