The breast cancer awareness season was busy for Breast Cancer Consortium partners and contributors as we work diligently to change the breast cancer paradigm.
- Cathie Malhouitre’s Au Sein De Sa Difference offered two events in France, a screening of “Pink Ribbons, Inc.” and a colloquium on living with cancer.
- Grazia de Michele organized a screening of “Pink Ribbons, Inc.” at the University of Sussex, Brighton (UK).
- Oncogrrrls and Marimachos cancerosas, organized by Ana Porroche-Escudero, held a public event on ‘Breast Cancer and Dissident Corporealities,’ a first of its kind in Barcelona, Spain.
- Cinzia Greco and Grazia de Michele put out a call for proposals to collect stories typically missing from the breast cancer narrative.Deadline for submissions is December 21, 2013.
- I gave talks at Colgate University and Texas Tech University on “Rethinking Pink” and the changing breast cancer landscape. Afterwards, students at Colgate developed a Breast Cancer Awareness Poster that contains more facts in one poster than most I’ve seen.
Several media outlets investigated pink ribbon culture and industry. Al Jazeera America devoted a full 30 minutes to pinkwashing, with guests Susan Love MD, Lisa Bonchek Adams, blogger and metastatic breast cancer patient, and me. It was the first television spot to give such in-depth analysis. Watch it now »
I also participated in a panel discussion on “Awareness, Activism and Pinkwashing” that aired on NPR Charlotte with Dr. Marilyn Sarow, co-author of Cancer Activism: Gender, Media, and Public Policy, Richard White, Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Cancer Institute, and Laura Nikolaides of the National Breast Cancer Coalition.
